PaperJET has no server to which a document could be sent: the tools are compiled to WebAssembly and execute within this browser tab, on your own device. Are documents uploaded to a server?
No. Every tool executes within your own browser using WebAssembly. The file is read from local storage by the browser and is not transmitted, so no server holds a copy of it. This may be verified by disconnecting from the network once the page has loaded; the tools continue to function normally.
Is PaperJET free to use?
Yes. All tools are provided free of charge, with no account required, no watermark applied and no file size limit.
Can a scanned PDF be processed?
Yes. The OCR tool reads the text from a scan and can return the same scan with an invisible text layer applied, so that the document appears unchanged while becoming searchable and available for copying.
Can a PDF be converted to Word or Excel?
Yes, where the PDF already contains text. Where the file is a scan, the OCR tool should be used instead; the interface will indicate which case applies.
Is there a file size limit?
No. As processing is performed on your own device rather than on a server, the constraint is the available memory of that device rather than an upload cap.
Compress a PDF
Reduces the size of a PDF so it can be emailed or filed, without the visible degradation that aggressive compression usually brings. Because the work is done on your own device rather than on a server, there is no upload wait, no queue, and no copy of the document left anywhere after you close the tab.
How to compress a PDF
- Open the PDF you want to make smaller.
- Compress. Large scanned documents take longest, as the images inside them are what carry the weight.
- Check the reported saving, and save the result if you are satisfied with it.
Most oversized PDFs are oversized because of scanned or photographed pages. Compression re-encodes those images at a sensible resolution and leaves text and vector artwork untouched, which is why text stays crisp.
The before and after sizes are reported when the operation finishes. If the reduction is not worth the trade, discard it and keep the original — nothing has been overwritten.

Is the document uploaded in order to compress it?
No. Compression runs in this browser tab using WebAssembly. The file is read from local storage and is not transmitted, so no server holds a copy of it.
How much smaller will the file get?
It depends entirely on what is inside. Scanned documents often reduce by half or more, because the page images dominate the size. A PDF that is already mostly text may barely change, as there is little redundancy left to remove.
Will the text become blurry?
No. Text in a PDF is stored as instructions rather than pixels and is not re-encoded. Blurring, where it occurs at all, affects photographic content only.
Why is my PDF still large after compressing?
Usually because it is a scan at high resolution, where the images are already near the practical floor, or because it embeds full font families. A PDF that is mostly vector artwork has little to compress.
