No document is uploaded. This can be independently verified.

Comparable services transmit your file to a server and undertake to delete it subsequently. PaperJET has no server to which a document could be sent: the tools are compiled to WebAssembly and execute within this browser tab, on your own device. Nothing is queued, nothing is capped, and the work continues if you go offline after the page has loaded.

Frequently asked questions

Are documents uploaded to a server?

No. Every tool executes within your own browser using WebAssembly. The file is read from local storage by the browser and is not transmitted, so no server holds a copy of it. This may be verified by disconnecting from the network once the page has loaded; the tools continue to function normally.

Is PaperJET free to use?

Yes. All tools are provided free of charge, with no account required, no watermark applied and no file size limit.

Can a scanned PDF be processed?

Yes. The OCR tool reads the text from a scan and can return the same scan with an invisible text layer applied, so that the document appears unchanged while becoming searchable and available for copying.

Can a PDF be converted to Word or Excel?

Yes, where the PDF already contains text. Where the file is a scan, the OCR tool should be used instead; the interface will indicate which case applies.

Is there a file size limit?

No. As processing is performed on your own device rather than on a server, the constraint is the available memory of that device rather than an upload cap.

Add a watermark to a PDF

Applies a watermark across every page — DRAFT, COPY, CONFIDENTIAL, or a client's name. It is drawn as live text at the opacity you choose, so it stays sharp at any zoom and sits over the content without obscuring it. Applied in this browser tab, so a confidential draft is not uploaded in order to be marked confidential.

How to add a watermark to a PDF

  1. Open the PDF.
  2. Type the text of the watermark and set the opacity.
  3. Apply, and save. Every page is marked.
Readable through, not painted over

The watermark is placed at the opacity specified as live text, so the document underneath stays legible. A stamped image at full opacity would obscure the very content the reader needs.

Diagonal relative to the reader

On a landscape page the watermark remains diagonal as seen, rather than following the page's internal axes and coming out at the wrong angle.

Questions about watermarking

Is the document uploaded to watermark it?

No. The watermark is applied in this browser tab, which is the point: a document you are marking CONFIDENTIAL is not one to send to a server first.

Can I use my own text?

Yes. Any text can be used — DRAFT, COPY, a client name, a matter reference or a date.

Will the watermark hide the content underneath?

No. It is applied at the opacity you set, so the document remains readable through it.

Can a watermark applied here be removed again?

Not from the output file by this tool. Keep the unmarked original if you will need a clean copy later.
